A
Brief History of the Georgia Coastal Artists Guild
The beauty of
the Golden Isles has attracted artists for many years. Over the
years professional groups have formed among these local artists.

In 1983 a number of artist members of the Glynn Art Association,
encouraged by Bill Hendrix, artist and instructor, decided to form a
guild of professional artists. This guild had common goals to market
their work, to promote high-quality art, and to accept new members
by a jury of their membership.
The original Coastal Artists Guild consisted of twenty members, but
within a few months of its inception it gained four more members.
Immediately, these artists focused on exhibiting their work. The
first show of the
guild
took place at the Goodyear Cottage on Jekyll Island. Next there was
an outdoor show at Redfern Village on St. Simons Island. Today the
Georgia Coastal Artists Guild is a 35-member group that holds three
or more shows per year and is involved in numerous art-related
events in the community.
The member artists are continuously trying to broaden their
knowledge and capabilities by individually attending classes and
workshops. The group often invites guest speakers to their monthly
meetings to present information relevant to marketing and
presentation of art or other special topics. The common desire to
further art and art education in the community leads
many guild members to participate in activities such as volunteering
their time with local school children.
Within the group, a wide range of media and a varied number of
styles are represented. This gives GCAG its depth in the visual
arts.
The Georgia Coastal Artists Guild can be contacted through the Glynn
Art Association at 319 Mallory Street, St. Simons Island, GA 31522
